I love elephants! I don’t think there’s a single person out there who dislikes elephants. So you can imagine my surprise when I discovered that there’s an ‘Elephant of the Year’ competition in Laos.

Laos, the only land locked country in SE Asia, is ironically known as the ‘Land Of A Million Elephants’, which may explain why there’s a competition dedicated to these giant, gentle creatures.

Launched in 2007 and occurs mid-way through February in the province of Sayaboury, near the city of Luang Prabang. This Festival features 60 brightly decorated elephants and can draw in up to 80,000 enthusiasts.

The two day event was originally set up to help promote and educate the need to look after the Asian Elephants, whose numbers are dwindling.

With elephants and a large range of entertainment the Elephant Festival sounds like a perfect two days, and should be considered in your next visit to Laos,. I know it will feature in mine!Imagehttp://www.asiannews.it
